Meadowdale HS Link Day Aug. 29, and other upcoming activities

Will you chip in to support our nonprofit newsroom with a donation today? Yes, I want to support My Edmonds News!

In preparation for the first day of school on Sept. 4, Meadowdale High School staff provided the following list of announcements.

Link Day for all freshmen is August 29 from 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. This is an exciting time for our 9th graders to be “linked” with upper classmen and spend the day learning the ins and outs of Meadowdale High School. Students should bring their lunches on this day. All ninth graders will be contacted by their LINK Leaders prior to August 29 to provide more information. There is a Link Dance that evening from 8 – 10 p.m. for all incoming freshmen. The cost is $3 with ASB card and $5 without.

Annual Garden Party: Our Parent Resource Group will be hosting our Annual Garden Party on August 23, 24 and 30, 31 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. This is a great opportunity to meet other MHS families and for us all to contribute to cleaning up our grounds. Please bring your gardening gloves and tools and come for an hour or two on one day or for several days. Students can earn volunteer hours for the time they contribute.

Class Schedules: Students completed registration for courses last spring. Freshman schedules will be distributed to individual students on Link Day August 29 – 8 p.m. to 2 p.m. All upper classmen can access their schedules starting August 29 on Skyward.

School Supplies: Students are expected to bring basic supplies with them on the first day of school – backpack, binder, paper, pens, and pencils. Many classes have specific supply requirements which will be listed on class syllabi the first week of school.

Freshman Parent Night: On August 29 while the kids are dancing the night away, there will be a meeting for freshman parents to learn about Meadowdale High School and many of the opportunities available to students and parents alike. This will also be a time to have some of your questions answered. Please join us in the Black Box Theater from 8 – 9 p.m.

ASB Card and Yearbooks: Students may purchase their ASB card and Yearbook on August 29. An ASB card costs $45.00. Yearbooks cost $68.00. Payment may be made by cash or one check payable to the Edmonds School District.

Parking: Parking Pass paperwork will be available on August 29 from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the ASB office. These forms need a parent signature and students’ first opportunity to purchase Parking Passes will be the first week of school. The cost is $45.00 – cash or check payable to Edmonds School District.

School Pictures: School pictures will be taken on Friday, September 6. These pictures will be used for ASB cards and in the yearbook so all students should be photographed on this day whether or not they are purchasing pictures.

Curriculum Night: Mark your calendar now for Curriculum Night on September 11 at 6:30 p.m. There will be a short introduction for parents in the Great Hall and then parents will have an opportunity to visit their child’s classes, meet teachers, and learn a little about expectations.

PSAT and PLAN Test for all Junior and Sophomore Students: On October 16 all Junior students will be taking PSAT at school and all Sophomores will be taking the PLAN test. This is part of a district wide push to have all students start focusing on being prepared for college. There will be a nominal fee for all students to cover the cost of the test. More information will be forthcoming in a district wide communication.

Athletics: Fall Sports paperwork may be turned in to the Main Office starting August 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Paperwork must be turned in and approved prior to turning out for the first day of practice. Please note that the High School Sports Participation Fee for 2013-14 has been reduced to $100 per sport.

Yearbook Sales and Senior Portraits: Students are encouraged to pre-order their yearbook for the price of $68 beginning the first week of school until November 7 to guarantee that they have one in June. There are only a limited number of yearbooks for sale at the end of the year and the price at that time will be $88.

If seniors choose not to use their ASB photo in the yearbook, they may submit professional portraits to yearbook staff by October 31. Portraits must be headshots (head, shoulders and chest only) and taken by a professional photographer, with portrait lighting, composition and technique in mind. No props (for example, pets, cars or phones) will be accepted. Any background is fine. Portrait can be indoor or outdoor.

Photos can be submitted in printed form (a 2×3 standard wallet size, please) or in digital form, burned on a CD (300 dpi, 2×3, jpeg). Please mail the photo via U.S. Mail (Meadowdale High School c/o Jen Mitchell, 6002 168th SW, Lynnwood, 98037) to the school or drop it off in Jen Mitchell’s box. If you would like your photo returned to you, please submit a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your photo. Photos will be returned after yearbooks are distributed in June.

You may submit your image on a flash drive, but note we cannot return drives. We are unable to accept photos via e-mail. The large number of attachments overwhelms the district server and often the e-mail ends up in the junk folder. To be sure that your photo was received, have your student check the list posted outside room C101 of “Portraits received.” The list will be posted by November 20.

Parent Pages/Senior Dedications for the Yearbook: Yearbook staff will accept parent page dedications for seniors from November 1 – December 19. Instructions and prices will appear in the October, November and December PTA Connection. Dedications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.Yearbook questions should be e-mailed to Jennifer Mitchell.

The main office is currently open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The counseling office is be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning August 19. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Debbie Burns, Office Manager, at burnsd@edmonds.wednet.edu.
