Driver Tom Thompson took a second-place finish in his first heat at the Bayfair Cup hydroplane race. Driving the Edmonds-based Miss Peters and May, Thompson got lane two before the start. Inside was Jimmy Shane in the Graham Trucking boat, winner of the last two races. Shane used his inside advantage to maintain a one roostertail lead over our local hydroplane. Thompson established a similar lead over third place Greg Hopp, with the Miss DiJulio, The other boat in the heat, Ron Warren in the Leland Unlimited, had trouble with the salt water on his turbine engine and was unable to make it to the start of the heat.

Steve David, in the last race of his career, won the other preliminary heat in the Oh Boy! Oberto. This leaves David with a 63-point lead in the season standings heading into Sunday’s final day of racing. The 63-point lead is less than the difference between first and second place in a single heat. The championship is definitely up for grabs tomorrow. David and Shane will race head-to-head in the first preliminary heat tomorrow.

There are two more rounds of preliminary heats tomorrow followed by the race’s championship final heat.
