Jimmy Shane, driving the Graham Trucking hydroplane, won this weekend’s Diamond Cup hydroplane race in Coeur d’Alene. Shane took the lead at the start and was never seriously challenged through the five-lap final heat.

Second place went to Steve David invthe Oh Boy! Oberto followed by Kip Brown in the Spirit of Qatar. Our local hydro, Miss Peters and May, finished fourth, but was later disqualified from the final heat due to a fuel flow violation.

“The U11 Peters and May team had a strong weekend and Tom Thompson did a very good job driving the boat,” Scott Raney, owner of the Miss Peters and May, told My Edmonds News: “I made a small adjustment to the fuel flow of the engine before the final heat and I went a tiny amount too much and we were DSQ. We did make some forward progress in our search for more speed and we are very pleased with that, looking forward to the last race in San Diego”

As a result of the disqualification, Edmonds native Jesse Robertson drove the FEDCO hydroplane to a fourth-place finish in his first-ever unlimited race. Robertson qualified as a driver at last month’s Seattle Seafair race but this was his first time driving an unlimited in a race. .”I am really sore after that,” Robertson told My Edmonds News. “the water was really rough and the boat was bounced around all day. I am scheduled to get another opportunity to drive the boat at the next race in San Diego.”

Fifth place went to J Michael Kelly, who drove the Beacon Plumbing, and sixth went to Greg Hopp in the Miss DiJulio.

The hydros now move to San Diego for the final race of the season on Sept. 15. Steve David’s lead over Jimmy Shane for the season championship has closed down to only 43 points, the difference between first and second in just one heat. It should be an exciting finish and you can follow it here on My Edmonds News.
