UW Hockey Club to open 2013-14 season this weekend at Olympicview Arena

It’s more than 10 miles from campus, but the University of Washington Hockey Club will again call Olympicview Arena in Mountlake Terrace home for its upcoming 2013-2014 season.

The Huskies train and play their home matches at the ice arena, located at 22202-70th Ave. W., on the Edmonds/Mountlake Terrace border. The team opens the season this weekend with a pair of tilts against the Idaho Vandals.

The UW Hockey Club is a member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II and plays in the Pac 8 Hockey Conference. The team is a non-varsity, club sports program with the school’s Recreation Sports Program and receives only minimal financial support from the university. No scholarships are offered to any of the hockey athletes. The club supports itself primarily through dues, fundraising, sponsorships and ticket and retail sales.

The Huskies have had strong success on the ice over the past three seasons, winning the Pac 8 title back-to-back in 2011 and 2012; the team was one win away from returning to the championship game last year, losing in the conference semi-finals to Oregon 4-3.

The 2013-2014 squad includes two players with roots in south Snohomish County. Senior and team co-captain Corey James is from Mountlake Terrace; junior Casey Moore is from Lynnwood.

The Huskies have 15 home games on the 2013-2014 schedule, all at Olympicview Arena. The slate includes a pair of matches against the Pac 8 defending champions Utah the weekend of Oct.18-19, and a pair of matches against rival Washington State the weekend of Nov. 15-16.

Admission to UW home matches is $5 with seating first-come, first-served. The matches usually draw a small but loyal following, with a larger contingent of students and sometimes the UW Husky band coming out for key rivalry matches. Game times vary; check the full schedule for the start times for specific games. You can view the entire UW Husky Hockey Club 2013-2014 schedule here.
