Guest review: Don’t miss Phoenix Theatre’s ‘A Nice Family Gathering’

Phoenix Theatre

“A Nice Family Gathering” is at the Phoenix Theatre now through Dec. 22, with performances Thursday-Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees.

Of course, the title is a tip off. The gathering is anything but “nice, “ despite everyone’s efforts to continue the family tradition of keeping the conversations superficial and friendly. Sound familiar?

This gem of a holiday comedy by Phil Olson is, “A heart warming story about a man who loved his wife so much, he almost told her.” It’s also about families and the relationships we have with our parents, siblings and in-laws. You’ll recognize some of your family members and yourself in this sometimes side-splitting, sometimes tender, but always entertaining and insightful story of the Lundeens, Mom, Dad and their three grown children.

The whole audience seemed to enjoy the many laugh-out- loud moments and became more attached to each of the characters as their history, struggles and misconceptions unfolded over the course of Thanksgiving Day.

Don’t miss this great production, right in our own backyard at Firdale Village. And, to make the evening even more perfect, have dinner at the Caravan Kebab across from the theater. They serve some of the best Middle Eastern food in the area.

  1. I made a first-time visit to Phoenix Theatre to see this play. I was pleasantly surprised at what a gem of a theatre it is. I thoroughly enjoyed this production and recommend to others. Ditto on the Caravan Kabab!
