Meadowdale did not have a baserunner past first until the third inning. After Calhoun struck out the first two batters, Tiffany DeWayne reached base on a throwing error. She stole both second and third while Julia Reuble was up, and then scored when Reuble reached second base on another throwing error.
Reuble scored after, on an attempt to steal third; catcher Hannah Baisch’s throw went awry and into left field. Emma Helm then smashed a home run to right field and the Mavericks had a 3-0 lead they’d never relinquish. The Mavericks scored six more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by the 10-run mercy rule with the score 11-1 Tuesday at Meadowdale High School.
Meadowdale pitcher Samantha Gregoryk pitched all six innings, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out eight.
Terrace threatened in the first. Maddy Kristjanson hit a two-out single to left field, and then Baisch hit a double to bring runners to second and third. Gregoryk got Ashley Fitzgerald to strike out swinging to end the inning, and the threat was averted. Calhoun put the Mavs down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. The Hawks had a runner on with one out after Sammy Harter hit a single, but Sage Huntersmith struck out and Megan Bruce grounded out to end the top of the second. The Mavericks similarly struggled. Ashley Brooke got aboard with a two-out single, but Calhoun struck Kaitlyn Webster out to end the second inning.
Kira Doan earned a one-out walk in the top of the third and then stole second. Kristjanson had a chance to drive in a run and hit a flyball a ways, but centerfielder Buchea made the catch near the warning track for the second out. Baisch grounded out to Gregoryk, and again, the inning was over with no score. The bottom of the third started great for Calhoun. She got Ciarra Hart to strike out after a 15-pitch at-bat, and then got Buchea looking. It looked like it was going to be 1-2-3 when DeWayne hit a slow roller to the third baseman, but Doan’s throw got past firstbaseman Huntersmith, and DeWayne was aboard. She stole second and third right after, which set up Reuble. She hit a grounder to Doan and, once again, the throw went past Huntersmith. DeWayne scored and Reuble got onto second base. Reuble then stole third and got home when Baisch’s throw got past Doan, and the Mavs had a 2-0 lead on unearned runs. The very next pitch after the error, Helm crushed a fastball over the right field fence for a solo home run, making it 3-0 Mavs. Finally, Gregoryk grounded out to end the bottom of the third.
Gregoryk made all three outs in the top of the fourth. Fitzgerald and Harter grounded out to her, and she struck out Amanda Aversano. The Mavs tacked another on in the bottom of the fourth. Brooke got on base with a single and made it to second when the right fielder’s throw was off-target. Webster drove Brooke in with a bunt single, and the Mavs had a 4-0 lead. Webster was caught stealing for the second out and then Buchea flew out to end the fourth. Calhoun tried to get the Hawks back into the game with a two-out infield single, but Doan was thrown out after laying down a bunt to end the top of the fifth. Meadowdale scored another unearned run in the fifth. DeWayne once again got on base with a ground ball to the third baseman, whose throw went past Huntersmith. Reuble and Helm both walked to load the bases for Gregoryk. She hit a groundball to the shortstop, Kristjanson, who decided to get the sure out at first. DeWayne scored on the play, making it 5-0 Meadowdale. Neither Costello nor Brooke could do anything with runners at second and third, as Calhoun got out of the bottom of the fifth with minimal damage.
The Hawks finally got one back in the sixth. Kristjanson and Baisch both were hit by pitches to lead off the sixth. Gregoryk proved she still had control by striking out Fitzgerald, but then walked Aversano to load the bases. Harter came up and hit a groundball to third, and Brooke gunned Harter down at first. Kristjanson scored on the play and broke the shutout. Gregoryk struck Huntersmith out for the third time to end the Hawk threat with the score 5-1 MHS going into the bottom of the sixth.
Meadowdale batted around in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. After Webster and Hart grounded out to start the inning, Buchea ripped a double into left field to get things rolling. DeWayne got aboard through an infield single and then stole second to put runners at second and third for Reuble. She didn’t waste her opportunity. Reuble lined a triple into left field to drive in Buchea and DeWayne, making it 7-1. Up next, Helm hit a frozen rope of a single that scored Reuble to make it 8-1. Then Gregoryk hit a double to drive in Helm and Hailey Costello hit a single to drive in Gregoryk, making it 10-1. Brooke got a single that pushed Costello to second, but it took Webster’s single to center field to score Costello. That run put the Mavs up 11-1 and ended the game by mercy rule immediately.
This is the second straight game the Mavs have won by 10 runs, and the third game of the year they have accomplished such a feat. The team hasn’t scored less than five runs in any competition yet. With the win, the Mavs improve to 4-2 (2-0 in conference) and play again on next Tuesday at Glacier Peak, at 4 p.m. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-5 (0-1 in conference) and play next on Friday at home versus Kamiak at 4 p.m..
