The Edmonds-based Miss Peters and May ended up in fifth place overall in Sunday’s Madison, Ind. Governor’s Cup hydroplane race.
After finishing second in each of his two preliminary heats, driver Tom Thompson was in third place after the first two sets of heats. Thompson was again in second place in the final preliminary heat when Thompson felt a violent vibration in the boat and had to shut it off. The damage prevented the Miss Peters and May from going out for the final heat of the day, which would have improved the boat ‘s overall position.
The new driver of the Oberto hydroplane, Jimmy Shane, had a perfect day going into the final heat, but then made a mistake and jumped the gun at the start. This put the Oberto one lap down and the boat ended up in fourth place for the heat.
This turned the race over to J Michael Kelly, who was driving Shane’s boat from last year, the Graham Trucking. Kelly guided Graham Trucking to first place overall in the race. Second place went to John Zimmerman from Kent, in the Spirit of Qatar.
The boats now head to Detroit for the biggest race of the year, the Gold Cup. Follow all the action here on My Edmonds News.
