Following a mistake at last week’s season-opening regatta in Madison, Ind., Oberto driver Jimmy Shane had a perfect weekend at the Gold Cup in Detroit. The top qualifier on Friday, and winner of his two preliminary heats on Saturday, Shane was able to keep up his perfect weekend on Sunday.
He won both his preliminary heats, which set him up for a rematch with last week’s winner J Michael Kelly in the Graham Trucking. Last week, Shane made the mistake and jumped the gun in the final. This week, it was Kelly’s turn to make an error as he got to the starting line too early and he had to run the extra lap.
With his main competition starting out a lot behind, Shane was able to cruise to victory in the final heat of the day. Second place went to Brian Perkins in the Al Deeby Dodge, followed by Cal Phipps in the Graham Trucking 2 in third. After serving his penalty, Kelly ended up fourth in the Graham Trucking. Mike Webster, who was also penalized, ended up fifth in the final heat.
Unfortunately, our local hydroplane — the Miss Peters and May — suffered from engine problems all weekend and scored no points.
The boats now move to Washington state for two races, in the Tri-Cities in two weeks, followed by Seafair in Seattle, one week later.
