Boys and Girls Club to sponsor ‘Miss Representation’ screening in Edmonds Oct. 2

MissRep-Event-Web-Photo2The Boys and Girls Club of Snohomish County will present a screening of the film “Miss Representation” followed by a panel discussion at the Edmonds Center For The Arts on Thursday, Oct. 2.

Cost is $25 and includes a 5:30 p.m. social hour and a 6:30 p..m. film viewing, followed by a panel discussion.

The purpose is to raise funds that will provide, according to the Boys and Girls Club announcement, “opportunities and scholarships for local girls to participate in programming specifically designed to develop a strong body and mind, foster leadership and community involvement, and provide access to career and academic resources.”

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, “Miss Representation” exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. From the announcement:

The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.
