Jimmy Shane and Kip Brown won their respective heats today at the Bayfair hydroplane race in San Diego. Shane, driving the Oberto, outran his number-one competitor for the season championship, J. Michael Kelly, in the Graham Trucking. Edmonds hydroplane Miss Peters and May ended up third followed by The Big Five Sporting Goods driven by Mike Webster. Greg Hopp was unable to finish with the Miss DiJulio.

Brown got a reprieve in his heat as he was in third place when it had to be stopped due to an accident involving Jon Zimmerman in the Red Dot. With the heat having to be restarted, Brown got off to a better start in his Spirit of Qatar. He extended his lead with each lap and ultimately finished about 2 1/2 rooster tails ahead of Cal Phipps in the Graham Trucking II and Scott Liddycoat in the Beacon Plumbing. Dave Warren drove the Tony Roma’s (U-100) to fourth while the Bucket List Racing, driven by Kelly Stocklin, suffered mechanical woes and failed to finish

The Red Dot spun in the first running of the heat and suffered extensive damage. It is not expected to see action during Sunday’s heats.
