Trader Joe’s coming to Shoreline, in old TOP Food space

From our friends at Shoreline Area News:
After the swirl of persistent rumors, Merlone Geier Partners, owners of the closed TOP Food properties, including Shoreline, have announced that the new tenant for the Shoreline store is Trader Joe’s.
The property is located at N 175th and Midvale Ave N, across from Shoreline City Hall.
No word yet about a permanent tenant for the TOP Food property in Edmonds, at the corner of 220th Street Southwest and Highway 99. For now, a temporary business, Halloween City, is locating there, as we reported here.

  1. At 52,000 square feet this will be a relatively large Trader Joe’s. By contrast, the store at Highway 99 and 196th Street is just under 10,000 square feet (which is why it cannot sell hard liquor: WA state law specifies that stores selling liquor must be more than 10,000 sq ft). I’ve shopped TJ’s here and in other cities for years, and while I’ve never taken out the measuring tape, I’d be surprised if any exceed 20,000 sq ft. TJ has traditionally positioned itself as a “chain of neighborhood stores.” I wonder if this move signals a departure from this. I’d really hate to see TJ morph into another big box grocery chain a la Safeway or Albertson’s.

  2. I doubt they will use the entire space as a TJ retail store. They will likely use it in other ways such as sublets or as a regional warehouse.

  3. Char they are talking about the Edmonds location that has no permanent tenant. Trader Joes is going into the Shoreline location.
