Autumn is my favorite season of the year. Besides the beautiful changing of leaves, it’s sweater season. Those who know me can assure you that I love sweaters in all shapes, sizes and colors. Wearing knits makes you feel like you’re cocooned in a warm cozy blanket without actually looking like you’re wearing one!
Boots! Boots! Boots! Wellies, riding, o.t.k. (over-the-knee) or ankle boots, how we love them, especially here in the Pacific Northwest, and they can be seamlessly integrated into every look. For the biggest trend of over the knee boots, I have one suggestion: Because they are such a stand-out piece, remember to keep them simple and clean. If you have too much going on, the eye has a difficult time on where to focus.
Runways have showcased a slew of gorgeous head-to-toe woolen knitwear trends, whether chunky, super slouchy or classic sweaters, or capes, leggings, floor-length coats and sweater dresses, to name a few. Although designers took this trend, as they do, to the limits of wearability, we can temper these looks because not many of us are going to be wearing a woolen onesie. Keep it sensible and stylish.
Now a super slouchy sweater does not mean sloppy. They can be very forgiving and comfortable, perfect for that busy mom running out the door. If you choose this trendy fall look, pair it with skinny jeans and flats as casual wear, slim pants (leather is very on trend) and ankle boots for a more polished look.
Sweater dresses are a throwback to the ’60s but in a more structured and fitted silhouette. The look can be clean and simple with over-the-knee boots and a utilitarian handbag, or more an edgy with tall boots and a clutch, offset with some beautiful accessories.
Capes lend a fun and sophisticated twist, with styles from military to red riding hood, and autumn weather is the perfect time to wear them. The versatility of this fashion trend lends itself to be worn, dressed up or down with practically any outfit or standing boldly on its own with a style to fit every body type and personal preference out there.
Although many of us prefer to shop online or the mall, it is equally important to support our local businesses. As such I will try to include local finds in future articles because fortunately in Edmonds, we have a wonderful selection of shops that cover a variety of styles, price points and ages — not just new clothes but consignment clothing also. On example is Rogue, located at 524 Main St. in Edmonds.
On that note, a sad farewell to Edmonds childrens store KinderBritches, which has recently closed. However, the good news is that a new store “Belly & Co.” — for moms-to-be and babies — is opening on Nov. 17. As the sign on the window states, they will be selling “fashionable, practical and high quality pieces.”
