John Owen, retired Seattle Post-Intelligencer sports editor and a columnist for the Edmonds Beacon, died last Friday, Oct. 3.
An Edmonds resident, John is survived by his wife Alice, son David and daughter Kathy (Greg Relaford); grandchildren Rosalyn and Sarah, and great grandchildren Connor and Tyler. A service is planned for Oct. 25; details are pending. That’s according to a wonderful tribute that former Post-Intelligencer columnist Art Thiel wrote about Owen here.
According to a bio posted on the Beacon website, where Mr. Owen wrote the “Owen at Large” column, he worked for the Bismarck Tribune and Yakima Herald and then spent 40 years at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Most of his time at the P-I was spent as sports editor, sports columnist and as author of a weekly Intermediate Eater cooking column.
Upon his semi-retirement, Mr. Owen moved to the Edmonds Bowl with his wife and they established that as their base for extensive world travel, the Beacon said.
Mr Owen was a consummate professional who even in “retirement” continued to fill our heads with his words. He and his message will be missed
Oh no! His lovely wife, Alice the Artist, was in for dinner at Chanterelle the very next evening with a friend, and I wondered where John was, but hesitated to ask. My sincerest condolences to Alice and family. John was a treasure, and he will be very missed.
Will certainly miss his wit and astute comments about food and where And how to eat it!
I will remember John’s wonderful humor every time I prepare one of his memorable recipes. My love to Alice (the Artist), and the rest of his family.
I still dig out old recipes once or twice a year that John Owen used in his Intermediate Eater column. Always looked forward to trying out some of those great recipes!
My condolences to his family. RIP John Owen
