Bastyr Clinic brings high-quality, low-cost medical care to Edmonds

Drs. Joshua Rubenstein and Laurie Cullen, both graduates of Bastyr University, are the supervising physicians at the weekly health care clinics held at the Edmonds Senior Center. "We can order lab tests, work with your primary care doctors, and write and fill prescriptions," said Dr. Cullen. Bastyr provides the clinic with stock of top quality medications, and the doctors can often fill prescriptions from these at low or no cost to the patient.

Are you feeling depressed? Do you suffer from headaches, insomnia or indigestion? Do you have a persistent cold or sore throat that just won’t go away? Are you avoiding seeing a doctor because of the expense, the hassle, or both?

If any of this applies to you, here’s some good news! Each Wednesday doctors and other experts from Bastyr University come to the Edmonds Senior Center to meet and treat patients of all ages.

On Wednesday evening, Nov. 12, approximately 50 people attended the Bastyr Clinic open house at the Senior Center to learn about their services.

“We’ve been holding clinics at the Edmonds Senior Center since winter 2012,” said Dr. Laurie Cullen, one of the supervising physicians who heads up the weekly clinics. “In the beginning we just operated in the afternoon hours, but as word has spread and more people began using our services, we brought on another physician, Dr. Joshua Rubenstein, and now operate every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. till 5 p.m.”

The Edmonds clinic staff includes Bastyr medical students in a range of specialties. L to R, Tatyana Batchtinova, Barry Burris, Dr. Rubenstein, Dr. Cullen, Audrey Schenewerk, and Anita Bermann.

Cullen and Rubenstein, both graduates of Bastyr University, are assisted by a regular staff comprised of Bastyr students in a range of specialties. They stress that their services are open to all regardless of age, medical conditions or ability to pay.

“Just because the clinic is housed in the Senior Center doesn’t mean it’s only for seniors,” said Farrell Fleming, Senior Center Director. “It’s available for all ages from infants on up, and you don’t have to be an Edmonds resident. And while we do charge a $15 appointment fee to help cover costs, we happily waive it for anyone who asks.”

The clinic typically sees between 16 and 24 patients each day, but you do need an appointment. To set one up, just call the Senior Center at 425-774-5555.
