The Edmonds City Council agenda for this Tuesday, Dec. 2 includes the following items:
– Discussion and action regarding staffing related to the City Council Executive Assistant and Legislative Assistant positions.
– Public hearing on the draft Housing Element of the 2015 Comprehensive Plan Update.
– Final report on the Perrinville Creek Flow Reduction Study and Pre-Design Project.
– Discussion on establishment of a Diversity Commission. This idea was raised after an incident last August when an Edmonds man and his family were subjected to racial slurs and a death threat along Sunset Avenue.
The council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, Public Safety Complex, 250 5th Ave. N.
The sincerest ‘Thank you’ to the City Council and staff who have placed the exciting topic of a Diversity Commission on the agenda for tomorrow evening’s City Council meeting.
THIS is a “Bundle-and-Be-There!” moment.
Many citizens have been a part of this discussion for a “Diversity Commission” and I thank the Council and Council President Diane Buckshsnis for putting this on the agenda this quickly!,
This is a serious issue across our country and in our neighborhoods, homes, work place, etc. Let’s not “brand” this like everything else and make a concerted effort to make sure our town is diverse and we do not accept racism, homophobia, bigotry, etc. of any kind toward anybody here.
We now live in a global community/world and we are all in this together on this small planet. …………This doesn’t need branding…….”Love is all you need”…………
Emily – I can’t be there Tuesday and I wanted to thank you for your efforts. It’s so great when people like you put energy into something and create movement.
Multi-culturalism…just like in France!
Tonight – as 7pm approaches – you may peek out your blinds – gauge the dark night – and the cold – because it is going to be dark — and cold. And for those who are disadvantaged economically because of ethnicity, level of ability, age, or other challenges, these winter nights are even darker — and colder.
That is why I am asking You — who live comfortably, who have the luxury of living above the survival threshold, who feel welcomed and comfortable, and fulfilled with your life in Edmonds — attend this Edmonds City Council meeting and encourage a continuation of the discussion that is taking place regarding formation of a Diversity Commission for the City of Edmonds.
It just could be both thrilling – and historic!
Again, thank you Diane Buckshnis for putting this on the Council agenda. I am sorry we even have to have this discussion umpteen years AFTER the civil rights movement, gay/LGBT rights movement, women rights movement, human rights, etc. that many of us were part of. I believe Edmonds is 88 percent white, and so perhaps we could have some change here and embrace diversity and open our town more to diversity, affordable housing, etc. ……Welcome this!. Again, there is something to be learned from our obvious “white privilege”…..from instructor Peggy McIntosh, there is a lot to be learned regarding “those who feel welcomed and comfortable”

The United Nations has just put out a report (last Wednesday, UN 2014, US )in this past week regarding human rights (and other important subjects regarding International Law and the United States. The United States is a signatory of the United Nations. We have signed an agreement, and that is important to keep in mind.
