Edmonds-based unlimited hydroplane Miss Peters and May find itself in seventh place as it heads into the final day of action in the 2014 hydroplane series. Driver Tom Thompson took third place in last night’s first heat but then had an engine fire in the second heat, and the boat failed to finish. There is one more set of preliminary heats Friday night before the winner-take-all final in the wee hours of Saturday morning Edmonds time. Only six boats make the final so our local boat needs to have a good finish in this last preliminary heat.

J Michael Kelly leads the field with two victories in his heats with the Graham Trucking. He has picked up 221 points on season leader Jimmy Shane, who drives the Oberto. Shane, who was penalized a lap and therefore got a fourth-place finish in his first heat, has a 611-point lead and only needs to score one second- place finish in the next two heats to secure the championship.

Local favorite — in Qatar at least –Jean Theoret, driving the Spirit of Qatar, won the first heat of the day, his first heat in an unlimited since retiring four years ago. He currently is in second place for this weekend’s race..

The final rounds of preliminaries and the final will be held starting at 11 p.m. Friday Edmonds time. We will have the final results after the racing is complete.
