Giving back: Washington Kids in Transition aims to help homeless families

holidayThroughout the holiday season, My Edmonds News will be highlighting charitable organizations or activities that we hope our readers will consider funding as a way of “giving back” to our community.

Happening Saturday, Dec 6 ~ 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

“Washington Kids in Transition, a grass roots organization of concerned local parents, has joined forces to create an organization that will “provide transitional housing in the way of emergency motel vouchers, and a snacks for kids program to homeless children in the Edmonds School District ,” says Kim Gorney, board member of the newly-formed organization.

A PayPal account has been established to collect donations for both projects.

The emergency motel voucher program was created out of the desire of the Facebook group, Edmonds Moms, to assist homeless families, according to Gorney, “There are many wonderful local county and state organizations set up to help the homeless community . . . The goal of Washington kids in Transition is to provide interim emergency hotel vouchers to families in crisis mode,” she said.

“The snacks for kids program provides food for the McKinny-Vento population. For many of these children, this snack is the only food they will have from the time they eat lunch until they return to school the next day for breakfast.”
Snacks for the program are collected through family and community food drives. Donations are dropped at bins located throughout the district including Revelations Yogurt in downtown Edmonds and at Kindercare in Brier.

“This is an excellent family community service opportunity. Children of all ages can help collect the food, and donate it to the families in need,” Gorney tells My Edmonds News.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, Washington Kids in Transition will have a booth at the Playful Learning Holiday Gift Bazaar between the hours of 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The bazaar location is 9521 240th St. S.W., Edmonds.

Board members for Washington Kids in Transition are Kim Gorney, Melody Nelms, Heather Alschuler, Erin Ornes, Leanne Brisbois, Arlet Gess and Kris Reintegrado. Advisor for the Homeless voucher program is Dawn Rene Becker.
