Edmonds-Woodway High School had three individual champions and earned a fourth-place team trophy in the 43rd Annual Edmonds Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 6. Decatur High School in Federal Way won the team championship in the 17-team tournament, which featured top schools from both 4A and 3A. Meadowdale and Lynnwood finished in 11th and 15th place, respectively.
Individual champions for the Warriors were Ebrima Fatty at 113 lbs., Sidat Kanyi at 120 lbs. and Spencer Schultz at 195 lbs. Meadowdale’s individual champion was Tim Smith at 220 lbs.
In the finals, Fatty faced off with Quentin Krogstad from Union. Fatty jumped to an early first-round lead before defeating Krogstad 6-0. Fatty finished the tournament with only one point scored against him.
At 120 lbs., Kanyi earned his way to the finals, pinning two opponents and winning a 4-2 decision in the semifinals. Kanyi defeated Moses Griffen from Decatur 3-0 in a hard-fought finals battle.
Schultz, a natural 182-pounder competing at 195, easily handled three bigger opponents to advance to the finals. Schultz’s final match against Derek Fry was a hard-fought physical battle. Schultz grabbed an early lead against Fry, the taller and heavier grappler, before capturing a 3-2 decision.
Meadowdale’s Smith pinned his opponents in the preliminary rounds and faced Antonio Corea from Auburn Mountainview in the finals. Smith led the entire match before winning by a 6-2 decision.
