Updated Saturday, Jan. 17, with story from Friday night.

The Wesco 3A wrestling dual meet between Edmonds-Woodway and Glacier Peak high schools on Jan.16 went down to the final match of the night before deciding a winner, but when it was over the Warriors emerged with a 37-26 win, handing Glacier Peak its first league loss in five years.

After forfeiting at 285 lbs, Edmonds-Woodway won a string of five straight matches in the lightweights, stretching their lead to 24-5. Glacier Peak scored a stunning victory in the 138 lb. match between Hiram Martin from Edmonds Woodway and Mason Fairbanks from Glacier Peak. With Martin leading 7-0 in the second period, Fairbanks got a reversal and a pin for the victory.

Glacier Peak came back to win four of the next six weights, closing the gap to 30-27. Laka Wilkins needed to win by at least a decision for the Warriors to win the meet. Wilkins jumped to an early lead in the first round. Leading 8-4 in the second period, Wilkins turned Glacier Peak’s Sam Clipper to his back and won by a fall, giving Edmonds-Woodway the victory.

With two league matches to go — away at Meadowdale on Jan. 22 and home against Lynnwood on Jan. 29 — the Warriors are in sole possession of first place in the Wesco 3A South.
