Applications now posted for Edmonds City Council Position 2

The City of Edmonds has released the applications for the 10 candidates who applied for the Position 2 seat vacated by Strom Peterson, now serving in the Washington State Legislature. A brief summary of candidates’ background is below, but you can also access all the applications, including questions like “Why do you wish to serve and what do you believe to be the greatest challenge for our Council?” at this link. Note that since not all applicants included resumes, we are not listing current employment and education information for some and not for others.

All applicants will be interviewed on Tuesday, Feb. 17 starting at 5 p.m. The interviews will not be broadcast live but will be taped and broadcast on the city website starting Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Mario Brown

Length of Edmonds residency: Four years

Board/commission experience: Kitsap County Council for Human Rights, Write on the Sound Planning Commission, Diversity Commission formation task force

Top three priorities for the city: Development of Edmonds along Highway 99, more public transportation, attracting more young families. “If I could have a fourth, I would like to see Edmonds become more diverse.”

Stephen Clifton

Length of Edmonds residency: 6-plus years

Board/commission experience: Seattle Design Review Board, Edmonds Center for the Arts Board, Edmonds Community College President’s Advisory Committee, Edmonds in Bloom board member. Also staffed (as former City of Edmonds Economic Development/Community Services Director) Economic Development Commission, Citizens Technology Advisory Committee, Highway 99 Task Force

Top three priorities for the city: Fiscal sustainability, funding transportation projects, effectively communicating with citizens, business owners and the general public

Adam Cornell

Length of Edmonds residency: 12-plus years

Board/commission experience: Edmonds Community College Foundation Board, Seattle Repertory Theatre Board, Center for Children and Youth Justice Advisory Committee; Boys and Girls Club of Snohomish County Board; Lewis & Clark Law School Alumni Board; Children’s Campaign Fund Board; Child Welfare League of America Board

Top three priorities for the city: Enhancing and maximizing unique character and charm of each of our neighborhoods and public spaces “in a responsible, respectful, ethical and thoughtful manner that encourages citizen engagement and collaboration”; promoting public safety and protecting the community; proactively improving transportation and infrastructure

Debbie Matteson

Length of Edmonds residency: 5 years

Board/commission experience: Edmonds Economic Development Commission, Snohomish County-Camano Association of Realtors Board; Washington Realtors Board

Top three priorities for the city: Promoting tourism and money coming into the city “as well as keeping the small town flavor of the community at the forefront”, developing a smart transportation center with rail and ferry, “making Edmonds a livable and workable community by using smart growth plans to blend business and living arrangements that coexist”

Michael Jay Nelson

Length of Edmonds residency: 4 years

Board/commission experience: Edmonds Planning Board, co-chair of Edmonds Mayor’s Climate Protection Committee, Washington State Budget and Policy Center Board

Top three priorities for the city: Enhancing quality of life, transportation and economic sustainability. “These priorities are based on my conversations with local residents as well as my analysis of the City’s Strategic Action Plan, which took a broad and in-depth survey of our community”

David Preston

Length of Edmonds residency: 48 years

Board/commission experience: Northwest Association of Health Underwriters Board, Washington Association of Health Underwriters, Port of Edmonds Port Commission

Top three priorities for the city: Protect citizens, including police, fire, hospital and safe roads; protect the money – “Make sure that priorities align with a healthy budget”; protect the Edmonds character and charm now and in the future with regards to growth and the changes that will occur


Alvin Rutledge

Length of Edmonds residency: 29 years

Board/commission experience: Save Our Log Cabin Committee, Yost Pool Citizens Committee, City of Edmonds Parks & Recreation Survey Citizens Committee

Top three priorities for the city: A balanced budget that protects public safety and service without raising taxes; creating jobs and opportunities for new businesses; healthy environment

Jeff Scherrer

Length of Edmonds residency: 10-plus years

Board/commission experience. Lincoln (H.S.) Lynx Alumni Association Board

Top three priorities for the city: Preserve and improve the character and quality of life in Edmonds; communicate with citizens and improve safety through ordinances and city government; govern in a fiscally responsible manner

Neil Tibbott

Length of Edmonds residency: 15 years

Board/commission experience: Edmonds Planning Board, Highway 104 Study Group, Citizens Transportation Committee

Top three priorities for the city:  Long-range planning with sustainable designs for the future; transportation systems, including walkways and bike corridors; preserving parks and natural amenities for future generations

David L. Teitzel

Length of Edmonds residency: 17 years

Board/commission experience: Washington State University College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board

Top three priorities for the city: Achieve a balanced budget and ensure an adequate reserve fund; protect Edmonds’ beauty, character and livability; ensure the high-priority strategies identified in Edmonds Strategic Action Plan “are acted upon to attract new business revenue and reduce the need for increased taxation”
