Host Edmonds-Woodway High School qualified five wrestlers for the finals and came away with five champions in the Wesco 3A South District Tournament held Feb. 6-7. The Warriors qualified 13 grapplers for regionals and place second to Ferndale in overall team score.
At 106 lbs., junior Ebrima Fatty jumped out to an early lead over Biscuits Graves from Ferndale before winning by a fall in the third period. Fatty takes a 30-5 season record in to the regional tournament.
Junior Sidat Kanyi took an early lead at 113 lbs. before finally winning the championship by a 20-2 technical fall over Glacier Peak’s Josh Vail . Kanyi has a season record of 33-4.
At 126 lbs., senior Jordon Lindamood took a 5-2 lead in the first period over Fidel Chishugu from Shorewood. After the second period, Chishugu had narrowed Lindamood’s lead to 1, but Lindamood dominated the third period, winning the title by an 11-8 decision. Lindamood’s season record is 25-12.
Senior Hiram Martin wasted no time winning his final match at 132 lbs. against Ferndale’s Wyatt Croy. Martin pinned Croy in 38 seconds in the first period. Martin who pinned every opponent he faced in the tournament is 25-7 for the season.
In a tough and physical bout at 195 lbs., Spence Schultz, a junior, took an early lead before finally winning the championship by a 5-2 decision. Schultz is 30-5 for the season.
Other Warriors qualifying for the regional tournament on Feb. 14 at Marysville-Pilchuck are: Mitchell Martinez – 3rd at 106, Dane Johnson – 4th at 113, Trystan Trudeau – 4th at 132, Edwing Martinez – 3rd at 138, Trevor Hendricks – 4th at 145, Abdoulie Jatta – 4th at 152, Michael Swires – 4th at 195, and Generous Yeh – 4th at 220.
