  1. The hummer looks like a female or immature male Anna’s hummingbird, a year round resident of Edmonds. Anna’s are native to Southern California and have gradually extended their range northward up the Pacific Coast.

    There are recent reports of juvenile Anna’s in Boise, ID. One theory is that hummingbird feeders, like the one in the photo, have enabled the Anna’s to survive our PNW winters despite the seasonal lack of natural food sources such as nectar from blooming flowers.
