Approximately 75 people attended a Chabad Purim Party Wednesday night at the Edmonds Conference Center. The Chabad Jewish Center of Snohomish County organized the event.
Purim is celebrated yearly to commemorate the Jewish nation’s survival in the 4th century over possible extermination by Haman, the prime minister of the Persian empire.
Part of the celebration involves dressing up in costumes. “It’s like a Jewish Halloween,” said one member.
Rabbi Berel Paltiel read the Book of Esther, which told the story of Purim. Each time Haman’s name was mentioned, followers used noisemakers as a symbolic way of stomping out his name.
Following the reading, there was a light buffet of sandwiches, fruit and drinks. “All kosher,” according to Rabbi Paltiel.
For entertainment, mentalist Lance Campbell amazed the crowd with his mind-reading abilities.
