The Brackett’s Landing wooden Orca, a fixture at the park since 1994, is no more.
According to Edmonds Parks and Recreation Director Carrie Hite, the “wood was very old and rotted. We didn’t realize how badly deteriorated it had become, until it just fell over.” That was on March 11.
The Orca was the work of Edmonds artist John Hurley, who had recently repainted it despite its bad condition.
“We’ve looked at it closely and consulted with the artist, and we all agree it’s beyond rehabilitation,” said Hite.
The Orca is now in the Parks Department storage yard awaiting disposal.

That is sad! My now-grown grandchildren loved to visit the orca. Let’s hope another will find its way to our shores.
Wow, I was just in Edmonds from out of town with 2 of my sisters. I remarked that I wanted to get all our family together ( 5 siblings) and go over to the whale for a photo op with our dad ( The artist John Hurley). I am sure most if not all of his grand kids and kids have at some time had our photo taken with him and his whale. We have loved it and our dad has loved Edmonds for as long as I can remember. He and our mom took us to Edmonds beach to play and watch the ferries all through our childhood. We have been proud that Edmonds let him put up his art for all to enjoy all these years. Thank you
Very sad — that orca was here the first time I saw the Edmonds waterfront.
Been renovated back on the beach
John spend 50 hours working on it so beautiful
