The Edmonds Sister City Commission is accepting applications for an Assistant English Teacher (AET) in Hekinan, Japan for a two-year term from August 2015. The AET will supplement the curriculum and lesson plans provided by the Japanese teacher of the class with speaking practice and skills, as well as class presentations when requested.
The AET must be a resident of Edmonds or a neighboring city and be either a certified teacher or able to demonstrate English language and communication skills that are effective in a middle school classroom. The AET should be an outgoing person who can interact well with middle school students, is interested in Japanese culture, and is eager to teach American cultural aspects along with English language skills. A bachelor of arts is required for a Japanese work visa; background and security checks are necessary. The AET should be willing and available to communicate with the Edmonds Sister City Commission contacts during their tenure in Japan. The AET will become an employee of the Hekinan Board of Education and final hiring will be done by that Board.
The City of Edmonds has had a 27-year relationship with its Sister City of Hekinan, Japan. The ongoing presence of an Assistant English Teacher selected by the Edmonds Sister City Commission and hired by the Hekinan Board of Education is a very important element of this relationship, the city noted in an announcement. This position assists teachers in the Hekinan middle schools and in many ways is Edmonds’ unofficial “ambassador” to Hekinan.
