Edmonds Kind of Play: Activities galore available for spring break latecomers

Spring break is next week. I have all my summer camps booked, and there was a hail storm or two this week. In my spazzy attempts to have summer locked down, I had forgotten that spring break was coming up and for that matter, Easter. To be fair, my kid had his first big time project due and I had severely underestimated that effect it would have on the household. I mean, I can barely make our printer work, so a 9-year-old wasn’t going to have much luck. I figured I couldn’t have been the only one who had forgotten spring break was coming and I know I’m not the only one whose kids need to get out of the house. So I called around town to see what activities are still available. While I was happy to hear how much was still available, this really takes the wind out of my “register on the first day possible” sails.

IMG_0593Let’s start with the Edmonds Library. On top of having two events planned during spring break, they are keeping their Storytime schedule for babies to preschoolers. The first event, “The Further Adventures of Jack,” is Monday, April 6 at 2 p.m. Kids ages 5 and up will spend their time “Climbing beanstalks, slaying giants and so much more. Join us for an afternoon of adventure with Jack!” The next event, “Parachute Science” is on Friday, April 10, at 2 p.m.. Again, this event if for ages 5 and up and will show kids how a parachute works. They will even get to build and test their own! For more information, you can call the library at 425-7711933 or visit www.sno-isle.org.

Edmonds Parks and Recreation has space left in two different spring break camps. There is the UK Elite Spring Break camp, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This camp include activities “from some of the best soccer nations in the world” and daily World Cup scrimmages. Kids, ages 5 to 12, receive a UK Elite jersey and player evaluation. I spoke with Debbie yesterday and confirmed that, while shin guards are recommended, neither the guards nor cleats are required. Kids will need to bring a snack and a water bottle and, if the forecast remains the same, a rain coat. The Discovery Days Spring Break Camp has limited space left. This ranger-led camp, for kids 6 to 12, takes kids all over town with daily themes like “Slugs ‘N Bugs” and “Wonderful Whales.” Any time we do this camp, I get a wet, dirty, happy kid at pick-up who can tell me all about bats or sea anemones, or something else I don’t want to touch. To register for either camp, call Debbie at 425-771-0230 or visit www.reczone.org.

While I am talking about Edmonds Parks and Rec, it is worth mentioning that the registration is now open for all May-August classes. Info can also be found on www.CrazeDigital.org.

ARTSpot Edmonds, 408 Main St., also has a spring break camp with space available. On April 7-9, kids ages 7 to 16 can take a three-day Fashion Camp. This camp, which runs from noon to 3 p.m., is like the embodiment of the Fashion Plates toy I had as a kid. Campers will be sketching and creating a dress from paper while learning the lingo, techniques and “inside secrets” of fashion design. I am often jealous of the camps offered to kids through the ARTSpot and this is no exception. Unfortunately, I couldn’t have passed for 16 at 18, so I will have to settle for dreams of Fashion Plates. You can register for Fashion Camp by calling them at 425-640-6408 or by visiting www.ARTSpotEdmonds.com.

I called Glazed and Amazed, 514 Main St., to see if they had space left open in their Spring Break Camp. Not only did I find out that you still have time to register for Spring Break Glass Camp, but their Summer Camp schedule is out. Glass Camp is April 7-9 from 1 to 3 p.m.. If you have kids in the Shoreline School District, there will be the same spring break Camp offered from April 21 through the 23rd. Glazed and Amazed Summer Camp starts July 7 with morning and afternoon options, as well as, an option to combine both and have the kids stay for lunch. Campers will have the chance to make all kinds of projects and, of course, take them home when camp is over! For more information you can visit www.GlazedandAmazed.com or call 425-673-5474.

I had wanted to tell you about the climbing classes at the Alderwood REI next weekend, but much like a PCC Cooking Class, you have to be on the ball to get a spot. Last I checked, there was one spot left, Saturday, April 11, in the 8- to 12-year-old class. If you are interested, there are more climbing classes coming up on both May 3 and May 30. In the class, which is $35 for members, kids can “Learn the basics of rock climbing in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.” An adult must stay the duration of the two-hour class. If you would like more information, you can reach REI at 425-640-6200.
