Snohomish County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Adam Cornell on Tuesday confirmed that he is no longer running for the Edmonds City Council in 2015.

Cornell was a candidate for appointment to the Position 2 council seat vacated last year by Strom Peterson, and at that time filed with the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission of his intent to run for the council in November. The Edmonds City Council in early March selected another candidate, Michael Nelson, to fill the Position 2 seat.

The State Public Disclosure Commission website still has Cornell listed as a candidate, but Cornell said he notified the PDC of his withdrawal a few weeks ago and received an acknowledgment.

Here is Cornell’s entire statement regarding his decision:

I have decided not to run for the city council. I now believe–with the benefit of all that I learned through the appointment process–that I can make a bigger difference for Edmonds by focusing my time and energy on my volunteer work and by protecting the community as a criminal prosecutor. I thank all of the citizens who encouraged me and supported me.

There may be a run for city council in my future. For now though, I’m looking forward to supporting Mayor Earling and other progressive city council candidates. By progressive, I mean leaders who understand the value of thoughtful and respectful dialogue and reasoned decision making, but most of all, candidates who understand that a “preserve Edmonds in amber” approach to the economic development and diversity is not in our city’s best interests.

As of Tuesday, May 5, three other candidates have filed with the PDC indicating their intent to seek City of Edmonds positions: Michael Nelson, running to retain his Position 2 seat; David Teitzel, seeking the Council Position 5 seat currently held by Councilmember Joan Bloom; and Dave Earling, who is running for re-election as mayor. Bloom has indicated she is not running for a second council term.

The mayoral position and five Edmonds City Council seats will appear on the November 2015 general election ballot. Current  councilmembers Tom Mesaros, Lora Petso and Diane Buckshnis haven’t yet formally announced whether they plan to seek another term.

While candidates must register with the PDC for fundraising purposes, the official candidate filing period will begin next Monday, May 11 via the Snohomish County Auditor’s office and will continue through May 15. A link to online candidate filing will appear here starting at 9 a.m. Monday, May 11.
