Beauty trends, both good and bad, tend to take the media by storm. The most recent trend is micro-needling. There are many variations of micro-needling available, from at-home rollers to medical spa treatments, so here is what you need to know:

What is Micro-needling?

Micro-needling is a cutting-edge innovation in cosmetic dermatology for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance. There are various forms of treatment, which vary in results depending on what device is used. Although there are at-home devices available, consult with a cosmetic dermatology specialist prior to any treatment to ensure you receive the safest treatment and best results.

How does Micro-needling work?

A micro-needling device is used to create micro-injuries in the skin, which encourage the body to heal itself by creating new elastin and collagen. There are various devices used for treatment, from rollers to pens. These different modalities reach different depths and when used by a cosmetic dermatology specialist, the treatment is customized for desired results.

Does it hurt?

The treatments are tolerable, with a sensation similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin.

At-home vs. medical office micro-needling?

While micro-needling can be performed at home, micro-needling done by a medical provider is considered safest and most effective. The needles on in-office micro-needling devices range in size from 0.5mm to 2.5mm — deeper needles are superior since they incite greater skin regeneration. The at-home version’s needles are only 0.2mm and won’t produce the same collagen-inducing stimulation that medical grade needles will.

What types of conditions does micro-needling treat?

A variety of skin problems can be addressed using micro-needling, such as acne scarring, trauma or surgical scars, discoloration, wrinkles and fine lines, tone and texture, enlarged pores, broken capillaries, and stretch marks.

The results…

Skin will be noticeably smoother and more radiant within a week or two after a micro-needling treatment. Improvement can continue for up to 6 months after treatment as collagen production continues. Most people see the best results after a series of 6 micro-needling treatments.

To ensure that you are a candidate for micro-needling and that it is the best treatment to achieve your desired results, it is best to consult with a cosmetic dermatology specialist.
