Meadowdale came into Friday’s game against unbeaten Glacier Peak hobbling.
Starting quarterback Drew Tingstad was out with a broken hand sustained during Wednesday’s practice and four other starters weren’t able to go for the Mavericks. After the first quarter, two more Meadowdale starters were knocked out of the game.
The Mavericks didn’t respond well to the adversity, falling flat in a 45-0 loss to the Grizzlies at Edmonds Stadium.
“I think this game had a lot more to do with us not coming,” said Meadowdale coach Matt Leonard. “We didn’t play hard. We didn’t play with passion. We didn’t play the way we’re capable of playing and it showed.”
It didn’t appear Friday’s game was going to be a blowout after the first quarter. Glacier Peak took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Colton Bunt midway through the quarter. Both of Meadowdale’s drives were three-and-outs. The Maverick defense then intercepted a Glacier Peak pass, but Meadowdale promptly turned the ball over on an interception.
The Grizzlies seized control of the game in the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns and closing out the quarter with a field goal.
On the first play of the second quarter, Glacier Peak’s Aubrey Carter ran in from the 1-yard line. Quarterback Ayden Ziomas then found wide receiver Alex Garrett on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Following another interception, Ziomas then connected on a 16-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Justin Guffey. Kevin Ramsey closed out the scoring with a 35-yard field goal as Glacier Peak went into halftime ahead 31-0.
The second half didn’t start out any better for Meadowdale as Glacier Peak marched straight down the field on its first offensive series. Running Iain Black scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, the fifth straight carry on a drive that started on the Grizzlies’ 39.
Running back Billy Lutali added an 11-yard run with just over a minute left in the third quarter.
“That was more about us than them, not taking any credit away from them,” Leonard said. “It was us just folding the tent, which is disappointing. That’s not who we are.”
Tingstad’s replacement Maxwell Johnson hardly had any practice time since Tingstad’s injury occurred toward the end of Wednesday’s practice.
Leonard said that Tingstad is projected to be out for at least four weeks. But with the broken hand being Tingstad’s throwing hand, Leonard isn’t sure how long it will be before his starting quarterback is healthy enough to play.
“At this point, we’ve got to prepare for him to be out for the rest of the season,” Leonard said. “He could probably play some defense but not offense.”
Meadowdale (1-2 in the league, 1-3 overall) will look to rebound against Shorewood at 7 p.m., Oct. 2 at Shoreline Stadium.
