Three Edmonds School District student athletes punched their tickets to next spring’s WIAA state tennis tourney after earning podium finishes at the rain-delayed 3A District 1 Tennis Championships that concluded on Thursday.
Edmonds-Woodway’s Grayson Turley and Arun Kalohke placed third in district doubles competition and grabbed the final berth to the state tournament. Turley and Kalohke defeated Mountlake Terrace’s Adam Lorraine and Jakob Peters in the third/fourth place district match.
Mountlake Terrace junior Jeremy Ansdell will advance to state after finishing second in the district singles’ competition, losing in the finals to Shorewood’s Gunnar Thorstenson 6-4, 6-2. Thorstenson and third place finisher Ulises Aceves-Castaneda of Everett will join Ansdell in representing District 1 in the state singles’ tournament next May.
The 3A state high school tennis championships will take place May 27-28, 2016, in Kennewick, and will include qualifiers from girls’ tennis competition that will take place in the spring of next year.
The district championships began play on Monday at Jackson High School in Mill Creek, but needed two extra days and a move to Skagit Valley College in Mt. Vernon in order to finish up due to the on-and-off rainy conditions in the area this week.
