Edmonds police responded Wednesday morning to a report of several people with an assault rifle in the 7-11 parking lot on 76th Avenue West near 212th, near Edmonds-Woodway High School. The caller said they were recklessly waving the gun, police said.

Officers arrived and detained the subjects at gun point, recovering what police described as “a very realistic BB gun.”

“This is a good example of some very poor judgment on their part,” Edmonds police noted in a post on their Facebook page.

  1. Wow where have I been. Never seen a BB gun look like a semi automatic machine gun. How real does that look.

  2. I hate to do this, but this is a pet peeve of mine. There’s no such thing as a “semi automatic machine gun” — almost all guns sold today are semi-automatics (one round fired for each trigger pull) in spite of hysterical people on TV trying to convince everyone that crimes are being committed everywhere with guns effectively banned in 1934 by the National Firearms Act.

This particular gun is designed to look like a military M4 carbine (which would be full auto), and I think has had the orange tip removed from it which would identify it as a toy. If that’s the right word.

Here’s some info on these type of guns.

  3. Thanks for that clarification, John. I, for one, do care “what the gun turned out to be” – it speaks greatly of the purpose and intent of the people standing in the 7-11 parking lot waving it around. Big kudos to the Edmonds police officers that responded and managed the situation without anyone getting hurt.

  4. BB guns are dangerous weapons. I have seen first hand the damage they can do to people and animals. I’m happy no one was hurt in this instance, but hope that whomever owns or was in possession of this weapon has not harmed a life prior to this.

  5. My blood pressure is rising to think that these guns are not only made to look like combat firearms, but also to think any kid in this day and age of school shootings running rampant in the United States, would brazenly bring a weapon (BB guns can put out an eye or kill a small animal) near a school and wave it around! Where are their heads at??

  6. I drive by that 7-Eleven twice a day going to/from Edmonds Community College. I’m very glad that the EPD got there before the situation moved inside the Dairy Queen, any of the neighboring businesses or the high school. Thank you EPD for getting there when you did.
