On Saturday, Oct. 3 a group of friends, family and community leaders gathered in the fall sunshine to formally dedicate the decade-old Fire Station 16 on 196th Street Southwest in Edmonds to honor a very special member of Edmonds community, Betty Mueller.

tn_DSC_2494A tireless crusader for the betterment of Edmonds, she was a primary founder of the Edmonds Police and Fire Foundations, and was a key proponent behind the construction of the city’s current Public Safety Building.

“She never held elected office, or served in any other official capacity,” said Edmonds City Councilmember Joan Bloom, “but she cared deeply about the community and by her many contributions made it a better place for all of us.”

Arriving in Edmonds in the 1930s from Missouri, Mueller and her husband purchased a small home near the corner Third Avenue and Caspers Street, where they raised four children. According to her daughter Betsy Mueller, “she fell in love with the town and its people, and dedicated her life to the betterment of Edmonds.”

Earlier this year the Edmonds City Council voted unanimously to to honor Mueller by naming Fire Station 16 in her memory. A citizens group raised funds to purchase a sign, which has been placed outside the fire station.

Mueller's daughter Betsy recalled how the family came west from Missouri, not really knowing where they'd end up. "But when we found Edmonds, Mom knew this was it," she said.

Mayor Dave Earling addressed the group, praising Mueller as a stellar member of community who "dedicated her life to the betterment of Edmonds."

  1. I wish that I could have attended, but I had a prior commitment yesterday. I met Betty on my first week in Edmonds and she gave me a brochure for the Edmonds Fire Safety Foundation. She invited me to a meeting to see if I might want to join the group. At the meeting, Betty introduced me as the new Board Member. How could I say no? 🙂 I served on the Foundation board for a little over 7 years. Betty was a good friend and I miss her.

  2. Great Job Dave and Rich as well as Jim Stevens of the City of Edmonds for making this happen. Thank you to all those that donated money to make this happen. What a lovely looking building honoring a wonderully kind and tireless volunteer.
