Volunteers and fabric are still needed for this Saturday’s Sew-a-Thon sponsored by the Edmonds Chapter of Days for Girls at Community Christian Fellowship, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Edmonds Chapter Director April Haberman began her work with Days for Girls a little over two years ago, acting on a pressing need for feminine hygiene products in the Edmonds School District’s homeless community. Now, she also partners with the international Days for Girls to draw global attention to girls in developing countries who don’t have access to feminine hygiene supplies
On Saturday, Days for Girls chapters and teams, including the chapter in Edmonds, will sew for 24 hours, to create as many feminine hygiene kits as possible in one day. The chapter will also be assembling hygiene kits for Edmonds School District homeless girls (these will include disposable feminine hygiene products and other hygiene products like soap, shampoo and toothbrushes).
In addition to volunteer sewers, organizers need donations of cotton fabric, flannel, Ziploc bags, thread, underwear, washcloths, and hotel-sized bars of soap.
The Days for Girls Sew-a-Thon is a communal affair, with several local businesses partaking in the fun. Bellisimo Beauty Bar will be putting decorative feathers in hair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for those who donate $10 or more. Also assisting is promoting the event is Fabric of Life Fair Trade Boutique on Main Street, which has done its window display to promote Days for Girls. Feel free to walk inside and see what a Days for Girls feminine hygiene kit looks like.
Day for Girls has also partnered with Revlon’s “Love is On” challenge through Oct. 30. The organization that collects the most donations wins $1 million. “if anyone would like to make a tax-deductible donation, they should do it now,” Haberman said. $1 million is on the line!” The link is here. The donations will come back to the local chapter of Days for Girls.
Also, the popular candle company Glassybaby will be donating 10 percent of all proceeds (in store and online) to Days for Girls. Use promo code “girls” at check-out.
