Letter to the editor: Sponsors, volunteers key to success of Arts Commission programs

For over 26 years the City of Edmonds Arts Commission has presented summer concerts in the park. For the past 13 years Lynnwood Honda and Acura of Lynnwood have partnered to sponsor these free concerts. For the past three years, the Hazel Miller Foundation has provided grant support for a new series of concerts on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Hazel Miller Plaza. Thank you to these sponsors for helping the Arts Commission provide free performances for all ages during July and August in city parks!

Write on the Sound – Writers’ Conference – Thirty years ago the City of Edmonds Arts Commission organized the first Write on the Sound writers’ conference. The one day event featuring regional authors, attracted about 100 participants. The 30th annual Write on the Sound was presented at the beginning of October, a sell-out event that included over 30 presenters from the west coast and about 270 participants from across the country, Maine to Hawaii. In honor of the 30th anniversary WOTS 2015 featured two speakers who had been involved in the early days of WOTS, mystery author Stella Cameron and renowned travel writer Rick Steves.

The success of this nationally known literary event is linked to the creative energy and hard work of the volunteer WOTS Steering Committee, and the generous support of community sponsors. Ongoing support has been provided by key sponsors, RBC Wealth Management – Heather Krause/Patricia Thorpe for the writing contest; Windermere Real Estate Edmonds – Greg Hoff and for the reception hospitality; Walnut Street Coffee for coffee service; and PCC Edmonds, Walgreens Edmonds and Trader Joe’s Lynnwood for other hospitality; Edmonds Bookshop for the onsite book store; Best Western Plus Edmonds Harbor Inn for lodging; and Rick Steves Europe and Edmonds Theater for the plenary addresses.

The 2015 WOTS Steering Committee, chaired by Edmonds Arts Commissioner Joanne Otness, included Erin Arguelles, Paula Rae Brody, Mario Brown, Cindy Bruce, Florine Gingerich, David Gross, Rubie Sanborn Johnson, Kim Votry, Sandra Walker, Scott Wilder, Judith Works, and Sylvia Youngberg. This volunteer committee works throughout the year to select presenters, plans conference events, and provides support for the three day conference along with Arts Commissioners and other community volunteers.

On behalf of the Edmonds Arts Commission and staff I would like to thank the many volunteers and sponsors who make the Arts Commission programs possible.

Kevin Conefrey, Chair
City of Edmonds Arts Commission
