When the students in Brian Monroe-Jones’ fifth grade class were looking for a project to spread learning and literacy in their school and community, the idea of a Little Free Library seemed like the perfect answer.
Joining with Rani Kettel’s fifth-grade class, they spearheaded the effort to install a new Little Free Library right on school grounds. Funded by lunchtime popcorn sales at the school, the kiosk went in this week. Built by a parent and decorated with original artwork by Meadowdale High School Senior Elizabeth Savchuck, the students marked its official opening on Tuesday when they filled it to overflowing with books.
“This is all about reading and the love of books,” said Monroe-Jones. “Everyone is welcome at our Little Free Library — anyone can drive up at any time, take a book or leave one off. Our goal is to help make it possible for everyone to have a book.”
The Little Free Libraries movement began in 2009. Since then the concept has spread worldwide. Learn more here
