Students Saving Salmon club asking for community’s help in tracking salmon sightings

The Students Saving Salmon club from Edmonds-Woodway High School — shown participating in a recent Town Hall meeting in the video above — is asking Edmonds residents who have observed salmon in creeks on or near their property to report their sightings. The students are developing a database on salmon in Edmonds streams. Current and/or past salmon sightings should be emailed to EdmondsStreamTeam@gmail.com.

Students Saving Salmon also would like to hear from Edmonds stream-side residents who may be willing to have water quality measurements collected from their property. The program is especially in need of suitable sites for measurements in lower Shell Creek (north of Caspers Street). Residents who may be willing to, or have questions about, allowing access to their property for this water quality monitoring program should email EdmondsStreamTeam@gmail.com.

Students will also advise interested residents about habitat enhancement opportunities that may be available, such as planting trees or native shrubs along stream shores.

As reported in our earlier article here, Students Saving Salmon is part of a Stream Team created through a partnership with the City of Edmonds, EarthCorps, Sound Salmon Solutions and local community members interested in salmon and environmental issues.

Called a Citizen Science program, the idea is to collect high-quality scientific information on water quality and use the resulting data to engage in community efforts to address stormwater and pollution issues in Edmonds streams and their effects on salmon. The program is supported by grants from the Hubbard Foundation, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Google grants.

  1. I recently ran into an SSSC student and his advisor taking readings of Willow Creek on the salmon hatchery grounds in Edmonds. I’m glad that young people are interested in the natural world around them.
