Catch girls basketball action at Terrace Holiday Tournament Tuesday, Wednesday

MTHS 2015 girls b-b#4460503As prep basketball fans wrap presents and trim the tree this week, they should also consider making some time to catch the action of the Mountlake Terrace Girls Basketball Holiday Tournament scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 22 and 23.

Ten local varsity teams will match up for 10 games over the two-day event in the main gym of Mountlake Terrace High School; admission is $5 per day.

Here are some reasons to put down the eggnog and head to the gym:

Mountlake Terrace Hawks
2015-2016 record: 0-2 in Wesco League South play, 2-4 overall
Coach: Jesica Anissipour
Why watch: The hosts are one of the weaker teams in this week’s event and are going through some growing pains under the tutelage of first-year Head Coach and Terrace alum Jesica Anissipour. But the Hawks will want to defend their home floor, which sophomore Jazz Zenk will likely be running around and diving onto with great intensity for two days.

Edmonds-Woodway Warriors
2015-2016 record: 3-0 in Wesco League South play, 6-1 overall
Coach: Rebekah Wells
Why watch: The Warriors would likely be the Wesco League 3A South Conference favorites this season if it wasn’t for the fact that the defending state champion Lynnwood Royals and perhaps equally-good Glacier Peak Grizzlies play in the same division. E-W is led by senior Mady Burdett, averaging 20.7 points per game and shooting almost 60 percent from beyond the three-point line. Teammate Missy Peterson is averaging 7.8 assists per game so far this year.

Meadowdale Mavericks
2015-2016 record: 0-3 in Wesco League South play, 2-6 overall
Coach: Caitlyn Houvener
Why watch: First-year Head Coach Caitlyn Houvener (Meadowdale Class of 2006) returns to her alum mater hoping to rebuild a Mavericks basketball program to some of its previous glory. As Caitlyn Rohrbach, she was part of the school’s last state championship hoops team in 2004. The Mavericks’ current 2-6 overall record may be a little deceptive; three of their losses are to Lynnwood, Edmonds-Woodway and Glacier Peak.

Shorewood T-Birds
2015-2016 record: 1-2 in Wesco League South play, 5-3 overall
Coach: Mark Haner
Why watch: The T-Birds are led by 6’2” post player Taryn Shelley who is averaging almost 16 points per game; the junior lit up Kamiak on Dec. 9 for 32 points and is expected to get plenty of attention from college scouts over the next two seasons.

Stanwood Spartans
2015-2016 record: 0-0 in Wesco League North play, 4-2 overall
Coach: Dennis Kloke
Why watch: With four girls (Haley Strowbridge, Ashley Alter, Kaitlin Larson and Julian Heichel) all listed at 5’11” on the roster, the Spartans have the team height to give any opponent fits. All four are also capable of scoring in double figures on any given night and can dominate the boards against anyone.

Marysville-Getchell Chargers
2015-2016 record: 0-0 in Wesco League North, 3-3 overall
Coach: Shannon Grandois
Why watch: The Chargers are young but stocked with talent to be nurtured. Junior Carley Wika and freshmen Mikail Montez average double-figures in scoring; Montez scored 23 points in her very first high school game against Cascade on Dec. 2.

Kamiak Knights
2015-2016 record: 2-1 in Wesco League North play, 4-2 overall
Coach: Brian Norman
Why watch: The Knights are probably even better than their 4-2 record may indicate; in their four victories Kamiak has outscored their opponents 253-148, while their two losses have been by a total of 10 points. The Knights are led by junior post player Sarah Payne, averaging 13.3 points per game.

Inglemoor Vikings
2015-2016 record: 5-1 in Kingco League 4A Conference play, 6-1 overall
Coach: Kristina Schumacher
Why watch: The Vikings were the WIAA 4A State Girls Basketball Tournament runner-ups last season and look to be just as strong this year. The Inglemoor front line is ruled by twin towers 6’3” senior Kennedy Nicholas (13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game) and 6’2” Amanda Luckett (13.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game).

Juanita Rebels
2015-2016 record: 1-2 in Kingco League 2A/3A play, 2-5 overall
Coach: Salvatore Coppa
Why watch: All eyes will be on the Rebels’ captain Tea Adams, who is averaging 21.8 points per game so far this season. Last year as a sophomore Adams was named the All-KingCo League 2A/3A co-MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.

Mount Baker Mountaineers
2015-2016 record: 2-0 in Northwest Conference, 8-0 overall
Coach: Kim Preston
Why watch: The undefeated Mountaineers are holding opponents to less than 38 points per game, but can the 1A team step up and compete against bigger schools this week?
