Plans submitted by national used-car chain CarMax for a dealership at the long-vacant space on the southeast corner of 212th Street Southwest and Highway 99 have passed the City of Lynnwood’s Project Design Review phase.

City of Lynnwood spokeswoman Julie Moore said that CarMax representatives will be meeting with a city building inspector in early to mid-January. “We anticipate that they will apply for building permits shortly after that meeting,” Moore said.

The applicant proposes to build a one-story, 30,000-square-foot sales and service building, a 936-square-foot car wash and a .76-acre landscaped retention pond at 21301 Highway 99. The average height of the buildings will be 30 feet, including screening of rooftop equipment. A total of 589 parking stalls will be provided (402 for sales and 178 for customer/employees).

The location used to be home to Detroit Auto Works, and prior to that housed a Gold’s Gym and a Safeway store. The building located on the lot was demolished in 2014.

    1. More auto sales outlets on Hwy 99 are in fact just what our city needs, as they are our major source of sales tax revenue.

  1. Plus as the article states, there was a used car dealership there previously, before it became a sanctuary for invasive weeds.

  2. I agree with Ron. Sales taxes on used autos are bound to generate more revenue for the city than property taxes on vacant parcels. SInce the property has housed a used car dealership in the past, it is being returned to its original use.

Highway 99 is a long-established commercial corridor. I would rather see large scale commercial development there than in other parts of Edmonds, such as Harbor Square or the waterfront. .

  3. I’ll have to correct my last paragraph as the property is in Lynnwood, not Edmonds. The same principal applies; however, about continuing to use the established Hwy. 99 commercial corridor for large scale commercial development

  4. It also won’t generate much additional traffic, which I have to say I am very happy about, living nearby. And at least it isn’t another Starbucks!

  5. I work for a new car dealership. We sell approximately 150 cars a month with an average price of $25,000. That is almost $375,000 a month in sales tax. Cities LOVE dealerships.
