The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors scored first, scored often and scored their eighth victory of the year as they clobbered the Snohomish Panthers 74-31 in the concluding game of the Mountlake Terrace Holiday Tournament Wednesday.

The Warriors jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first five minutes of the match-up, built a 43-17 advantage at halftime, then cruised to the easy win.

E-W Head Coach Robert Brown liked the pace his squad played right from the start. “We have a lot of quality guys who can play,” Brown said, “so we like to play up tempo.”

One of the catalysts for E-W’s fast start was senior David Woodard, who scored 17 of his game-high 28 points in the first half. In his first year as a Warrior – Woodard is a transfer student from O’Dea High School – the soft-spoken guard showed how well he has fit into the E-W system.

“I just like to let my game speak,” Woodard said. “I don’t really want to be that vocal – I’m starting to get better – because I’m new and I just don’t want to come in with the team and start running stuff. I just want to let my role come.”

“I just want to be someone that help us win,” Woodard added.

Though new to the program this year, Woodard believes all the time he has spent with his fellow teammates over the past six months, plus some longtime relationships, has helped build a chemistry that is paying off on the court.

“I played football with a lot of them,” Woodard explained. “Then there was summer basketball, fall ball. Me and Trey (Holland) have known each other for a long time. Me and Jordan (Rice) played football together in eighth grade. It was easy to come (to Edmonds-Woodway); they accepted me.”

In addition to Woodard’s 28 points on Wednesday, Holland scored 16 points and Noah Becker added 12 points for the Warriors.

Jacob Shogren was the only Panther to reach double-digit scoring with 10 points, as Snohomish struggled to find any offensive rhythm while trying to keep up with the high-flying Warriors.

Edmonds-Woodway reaches the midpoint of the 2015-2016 season with an overall record of 8-2, but has four of its next five games on the road. They next travel to Arlington to face the Eagles on Jan. 5, then must take on a strong Shorecrest Scots squad at Shorecrest High School on Jan. 8.
