In the battle for control of Wesco 3A at Glacier Peak High School, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors continued to show their strength in a very hard-fought battle, handing the Grizzlies a 45-21 defeat Friday.
With the match tied 12-12 after the fifth match of the night, E-W took the lead and never looked back. Four Warrior seniors wrestled a weight above their normal weight and all four came away victorious. Sophomore Salihou Fatty won an overtime match to close out the night.
In the first match of the contest, Sidat Kanyi moved up a weight and wrestled 132 against Tim Mandzyuk from Glacier Peak. Kanyi took an early lead but Mandzyuk closed the gap and Kanyi need to score late to secure a 7-5 decision.
At 152, E-W’s Jonah Cortezzo wrestled in a tight and physical match against Mitchell Hines. Hines and Cortezzo, both seniors, were wrestling up a weight. Cortezzo took a 3-2 lead in the first period and hung on at the end to win 9-7
Edmonds Woodway’s Mason McDaniel, the number-one-ranked, 170-pound grappler in the state ,moved up to 182 to face senior Micah Palmaffy at 182. McDaniel dominated Palmaffy, scoring at will before finally winning by a fall.
Warrior senior and team captain Spencer Schultz moved up from 195 to 220. Schultz’s opponent Jesse Gere, also a senior, gave Schultz a very physical battle. The two spent much of the match on their feet in a battle for control. Schultz was able to score the takedowns he needed to win 8-4.
The last match of the evening at 126, between Salihou Fatty from E-W and Hunter Cabrera from Glacier Peak, proved to be the most exciting. Cabrera, a senior, scored a takedown in the first round to lead 2-0. In the second period, both grapplers scored with Cabrera leading 4-2 at the end of the second. The third period started with the wrestlers in the neutral position. There was lots of action but no scoring before Fatty, a sophomore, scored a takedown near the end of regulation to knot the score at 4 and force overtime. Starting neutral in the sudden victory overtime period, both wrestlers worked for control before Fatty scored a takedown with 20 seconds left to get the 6-4 victory.
The Warriors’ next dual meet is Thursday, Jan. 21 at home against cross-town rival Meadowdale.
