The Edmonds Arts Commission is presenting ceramics by Janet Still and fabric artworks by Darlene McLellan in the display case at Frances Anderson Center through March 14. This collaborative exhibit focuses on the nature themes that are inspirations for both artists.

Humans, as well as nature, are the main source of inspiration in Janet Still’s ceramics. Featured pieces include heads, a figure, and a series of small birds. Still’s human figures are always emotional, as compared to physical, self-portraits. She and her sons own 80 heavily wooded acres in eastern Washington, and the birds in her exhibit reflect her interest in the mystery birds, the unseen ones.

Still has four degrees in art, including an MFA in Ceramic Arts, all from the University of Washington. For the past 29 years she has taught art to both children and adults in Seattle, Lynnwood, and the Sculptors Workshop in Edmonds, where she is Director of the Sculptors’ Side.

Darlene McLellan’s artworks combine vintage kimono fabrics with embroidery, beading and metal embellishment. The use of what was once called “domestic arts,” along with these exquisitely designed fabrics acknowledges the unknown artisans of the past. The reflection of nature in the work of weavers and dyers using traditional methods is a constant reminder of the values in nature around us.

McLellan’s background includes design drafting and and scientific illustration. She has a BA in Fine Arts from Washington State University, studied fine arts at Nihon Daigaku (University of Japan, Tokyo) and has a post-graduate certification in Museum Studies from the University of Washington. McLellan has studied fiber arts with internationally recognized historians and designers. Her commissioned artworks are in private and public collections in the United States, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Japan. She has acted as a juror for regional and local arts organizations, as a curator and exhibits designer.
