It was Senior Night Thursday for the Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball team and the Warriors celebrated by beating the visiting Shorecrest Scots, 61-44. This year’s class features only three players in their final year: Maddie Tudor and sisters Mady and Ally Burdett. Mady lead E-W in scoring with 21 points, including five three-pointers.

Scoring came early and often for the home team as they racked up 21 first-quarter points and led by eight after one. Mady Burdett hit three from beyond the arc to pace E-W.

The second quarter was more balanced as Shorecrest was able to keep it a ballgame. The Scots missed eight free-throws in the frame, allowing the Warriors to extend the lead to 13 at the break. Mady Burdett had 11 and Tudor 9 for E-W, while Missy Peterson contributed 7 in the quarter.

The third quarter saw more from Burdett as she nailed another pair of threes. E-W’s offense began to stall, allowing Shorecrest back into the game. After the Scots scored the first basket of the fourth quarter, suddenly the Warriors found themselves only up by 7.  Coach Rebekah Wells called a timeout and the Warriors seemed to listen, as they went on to score 14 of the next 16 points, extending their lead to 19 and finishing with a 17-point margin.

“I told them we’re ahead right now, but if we’re not careful, we won’t be. They needed to start reversing it (the ball) and once we did that the baskets just started coming,” Wells said.

After Mady Burdett’s 21, the Warriors got 13 from Tudor, who also added 6 rebounds, and 13 from Peterson, a junior who contributed 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Julia Strand and Wurrie Njadoe shared game-high honors for the Scots with 19 each.

Coach Wells talked about her three seniors:

Maddie Tudor:  “She transferred in from Moses Lake and was an immediate starter. She was a great player and worked with the girls all summer. Wants to go on to college and hopefully play basketball.” Added Tudor: “I’ve made so many friends here, it’s such a good feeling to be a part of this group.”

Mady Burdett: “She’s a great shooter, a four-year starter. Not sure where she’s going next but I’m sure she’ll continue to play basketball.” Added Mady:”It’s sad that it’s almost over, but we want to make history and go to state. I’ll always remember my sophomore year when we went to state.”

Ally Burdett: “First year on varsity, but been in the program. She’s a quiet player, but really steps it up when you ask her to. A real hard worker.”
