Ten Edmonds-Woodway Warriors and two Meadowdale Mavericks punched their tickets to Mat Classic XXVIII, the state high school wrestling championships, with strong outings at the 3A Region 1 tournament held Saturday in Marysville.
Winning regional titles and qualifying for the state tournament from E-W were Mitchell Martinez (106-weight class), Ebrima Fatty (113-weight class), Sidat Kanyi (120-weight class) and Riley Seward (145-pound weight class). Joining them for the state tourney will be Mason McDaniel (second place, 160-pound class), Spencer Schultz (second place, 182-pound class), Anthony Lindamood (third place, 152-pound class), Abdoulie Jatta (third place, 170-pound class), Salihou Fatty (fourth place, 120-pound class), and Michael Swires (fourth place, 195-pound class).
Warrior Coach Brian Alfi was pleased with how his squad performed at the regional tourney as he looked ahead to the state tournament. “I am very proud overall of the way we wrestled,” he said. “They’re defiantly trending the right direction towards next weekend.”
“Sending 10 to state gives us a chance to be very competitive next weekend in what looks like a wide open 3A title race,” Alfi continued. “It’s been an awesome journey with this group. I am excited to watch them compete one more weekend.
From Meadowdale, Beck Millet (132-pound class) and Liam Ball (182-pound class) qualified for the state tournament as a result of their third place finishes on Saturday.
