Prep wrestling: Warriors to host sub-regional tournament Friday, Saturday

Coach Brian Alfi will lead the Warriors in the Sub Regional tournament Friday and Saturday at EWHS.

Will the powerful Edmonds-Woodway Warrior wrestlers come away with a win in the sub regional tournament, being held at EWHS this Friday and Saturday?

Edmonds-Woodway Coach Brian Alfi says the team has not won sub regionals in the history of the school, and in 2015 lost the title by just seven points.

This year, Alfi says, “we are excited to get post season started. All year we’ve felt like our depth has been our greatest strength.”

The Warriors finished the season undefeated in the Wesco league, including a victory over highly-ranked Arlington. Now going into the tournament season with a format that allows two wrestlers per weight, the Warriors looked poised to win.

Alfi is cautious, stating that tourney participants Mountlake Terrace, Glacier Peak and Hazen could make a run at the Warriors.

With Ebrima Fatty, Sidat Kanyi, Riley Seward and Mason McDaniel all returning state Mat Classic placers, the Warriors are well- positioned to have at least five in the finals at Sub Regionals. In addition, Mitchell Martinez, Spencer Schultz and Michael Swires are all highly-ranked wrestlers who could make it to the finals.

“Should be an interesting and entertaining weekend of wrestling,” Alfi says.

Wrestling starts Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Edmonds-Woodway gym
