Ask the Edmonds Cop: Noise complaints

Edmonds Police Sgt. Shane Hawley answers your public safety questions. This week: How police handle noise complaints.

  1. Very useful! But I do think I’ll donate large, clear clocks to both of you, for practicing time-telling! 🙂

As before, valuable an informative – thanks!

  2. Mr. Brown,

I spent so many years working graveyard patrol that the concept of Day and Night are a mystery to me. Glad you are enjoying our segments. Feel free to send in questions for future segments.

    Hello Sue!

Barking dogs are covered under EMC 5.05.115 and also under EMC 5.30.130 (although not specifically referenced there). If you have a complaint about a barking dog during night time hours, call 911. An officer will come out. We also encourage people to follow up with our animal control officers during daytime hours. They specialize in those issues and can explain, in better detail, the abatement process for barking dogs.

  3. Can anything be done to reduce the Band noise during the Taste of Edmonds. Lately we have left for the day and return after 10 oclock.

  4. What about the loud bikes that roll off the ferry at 0530 every morning? Excess of 90 decibels… What’s the rule on that?

  5. Curious about the downtown city noise ordinance. Particularly during the hours from 9 am to 7pm.
Any links would be very helpful. The one above unable to log in.

  6. Help! What are the rules about using loud machinery, power tools, every day for hours. Drills, hammers, other things I can’t determine but are loud!. At first I thought he was building something and it would end, but this has gone on for several years. I now think he is running some kind of business, but I can’t be sure. Other neighbors notice it too. Since I’ve been working from home this year I realized it is a daily thing. It is very loud, and even with windows closed, I can hear it. I do like to keep my windows open but can’t now because of the loud noises.

  7. My husband and I live in a townhome with Condo’s behind us on our bedroom side. For the past 2-3 months there has been a, for lack of better description, “Gong” sound that has been going off various times between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am… sometimes thru 8:00 am. Typically it goes off between 4:30am – 5:30am daily. In the past month there have been more “Gong” sounds added. We heard it last evening at 11:30 pm and 1:30 am. We suspect which neighbor the sound is coming from but cannot prove it. We are continually awakened and can’t get back to sleep. Because it’s gone on so long it’s effecting our sleep where we are tired and unproductive during the day at our jobs. We were looking for your assistance on any suggestions you may have to track down where the sound is coming from in order to have it stopped.
