Snohomish County Fire District 1 is encouraging residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms when they set their clocks forward to Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, March 13.
“Smoke alarm batteries should be changed twice a year, but remembering to do this can be difficult,” said Kim Schroeder, Fire District 1 public education coordinator. “That’s why we’re encouraging residents to change their smoke alarm batteries when they change their clocks to Daylight Saving Time.”
The most common cause of non-working smoke alarms is worn or missing batteries.
To make sure smoke alarms are in working order:
– Test at least once a month using the test button.
– Clean at least once a month. Dust with a vacuum to unclog the vents.
– Replace the battery twice a year.
