Kids and their caregivers fanned out across downtown Edmonds Saturday afternoon to enjoy book readings, face painting, free movies, crafts and a scavenger hunt — part of the Read Across America celebration aimed at encouraging families to read together.
The event, sponsored by the Edmonds Education Association, happens near Dr. Seuss’s birthday. In addition to raising awareness about the importance of reading, it raises money to support Edmonds School District libraries.
The Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 strolled down the street, occasionally pausing for photo ops. Children dug their spoons into heaping cups of frozen yogurt while they enjoyed children’s stories in the Revelations Yogurt reading room.
The Edmonds Education Association coordinates Read Across America activities for the Edmonds School District. Earlier this week, similar events were held in Lynnwood Crossroads businesses.
As part of the festivities, My Edmonds News sponsor and Lynnwood Crossing business Great Clips is offering $7.99 kids hair cuts through March 12.
Community members who would like to donate to school libraries can make checks payable to the Foundation for Edmonds School District, earmarked for Read Across America, and mail them to the Foundation for Edmonds School District, P.O. Box 390, Lynnwood, WA 98046.
