State troopers will be conducting left lane emphasis patrols through Friday, March 18.

The patrols will focus on people driving in the left lane for extended periods of time instead of using the left lane only to pass. Vehicles with trailers are also never permitted in the left lane.

The Washington State Patrol said in a press release that the emphasis patrol is being conducted “to bring increased awareness to the left lane law.”

Last year, 13,909 vehicles were stopped for left lane violations.

  1. I believe the statement “Vehicles with trailers are also never permitted in the left lane.” applies only on freeways with three or more lanes in one direction. However, that’s not clearly posted on I-5 in the metro area and should be both posted and enforced between Everett and Tacoma.
