Lynnwood High School’s Mikayla Pivec did more than just win the high school girls 3-point championship in Houston late last week. She took on boys champion and Virginia recruit Kyle Guy in the Samsung Battle of Champions, tying his performance of 19 points, and was named co-champion of the event.

The American Family Insurance High School Slam & 3-Point Championships were held April 1 in Houston, but the event was broadcast on CBS Sunday during the network’s Final Four basketball festivities. Pivec and her dad Mike were flown all-expenses-paid to Houston so she could compete in the event.

“To put 19 against Kyle, I was proud of my shooting today,” Pivec told USA Today after the victory. “ Pivec, who has played on the Lynnwood High School varsity girls basketball team for the past four years and helped lead the Royals to a state title in 2015, will play for Oregon State next year.

Piece won the girls title by edging Destiny Slocum 15-14 in the final round. “It means a lot,” Pivec told USA Today. “There was a lot of All-Americans here. The time put in has paid off in these competitions. It’s been a great experience, I’m glad I was able to experience this.”

Pivec was named a Washington State basketball player of the year by the Associated Press, and she was also the state’s Gatorade player of the year. This year, she averaged 22 points, 14 rebounds and five steals per game for the Royals, who finished third in the Class 3A state basketball tournament.
