Soon, you’ll be able to mail a letter and return a library book at the same location.
Edmonds City Councilmember Dave Teitzel said Thursday morning that the City of Edmonds late Wednesday approved a plan to locate a new drive-up mailbox next to the book-drop bins at the south side of the Edmonds Library in the 600 block of Dayton Street.
“The post office is now scheduling installation and we anticipate the new box will be in place within a few weeks,” Teitzel said. “We very much appreciate the cooperation of Postmaster Todd Merriman in making this relocation happen and also thank the local businesses who proposed alternative sites for us to consider.”
Teitzel began looking for new locations following reports the former downtown drive-up mailbox would be removed from its location on 2nd Avenue between the old and new U.S. Post Office facilities. That mailbox was removed Tuesday by postal service maintenance staff.
This location makes so much sense with its simple logistics. Good work, Dave Teitzel and the others who made this happen. Also, a nod should go to the SnoIsle folks, namely Chy Ross and Richard Suico, for cooperation in sharing this area with the USPS. There will be times when the drive through lane is closed, e.g., when the bookdrops are being emptied, so drivers should be unsurprised if they need to make a second pass on occasion. So, while not quite as free to use as the old mail drop, it’s a good answer crafted through the intervention of local government on an extremely quick turnaround.
Sounds like a great solution and probably easier to use then the busy intersection at Second and Main.
Big kudos to everyone involved with this great solution! Thanks especially Dave for being the community champion along with your councilmember duties – much appreciated. But wondering what about a handicap space or 2 in front of the new post office location? Its a lot of work for us ‘less than fully abled bodies’ to park under the building, take the elevator just to drop off a package in the bin.
Thanks, Dave!
Any chance the ballot box that is currently at the other end of the library parking lot could be moved over by the book drop and mail drop? That way we could do three things at once and would no longer have to park and walk our ballot over to the drop box 🙂
Samantha, if you drive any where near Westgate, the UPS store accepts postal packages for mailing. The postal carrier stops there and picks up out going mail. The staff there are quite friendly and I have seen them go out to cars (there are parking spots right at the front and back doors) and help customers bring packages into the store. Granted, some of the packages are being shipped UPS, but I have sent some via the postal service also. They do a cost comparison so that the customer can send it the cheapest way.
Thanks Dave and others who are making this possible. I tried the Post Office box this past week and was fortunate that I had a friend who could deposit the mail and that there was an open space to pull in, but could see where this new location will be much easier to use.
Brilliant
